Where shared use paths are constructed on hillsides, place ditches of suitable dimensions on uphill sides of the paths to intercept hillside drainage. If tying into a closed storm water system, provide catch basins with drains where needed to carry the intercepted water away from the path. Locate drainage grates and utility covers at the outside edge of the path and flush with the path surface or off the path entirely. Install bicycle-safe drainage grates whenever catch basins are used in conjunction with shared use paths (refer to VTrans Standard Sheet D-15 and D-16). Set grates and utility covers flush with no raised edges, no greater than1.3 cm (0.5 in) below the surface of the surrounding pavement.
